POSITION OVERVIEW
BDC Capital is the investment arm of BDC – Canada’s only bank devoted exclusively to entrepreneurs. With over 7 billion dollars under management, serving as a strategic partner to Canada's most innovative firms, we cover the full spectrum of risk capital, from seed investments to growth capital.
The Climate Tech and Sustainability Venture Funds are a $1.2B platform dedicated to investing in Canadian companies that drive our transition to a cleaner future whether that’s driving ghg reductions, climate impact, a sustainable future or Canada’s net zero ambitions. Combined, the funds have $400M to invest to catalyze global champions providing solutions to the world’s most pressing climate and sustainability challenges.
The Students join one of our teams for a work term during undergraduate or graduate studies, or as an early-career professional. As a Student, you will support the investment team in evaluating potential investment opportunities, while supporting the portfolio management of the existing portfolio. This includes:
Conducting market, industry, and competitive research
Performing financial and operational analysis
Assisting with due diligence and investment memos
Supporting back-office and middle-office functions
Engaging with founders, experts, and ecosystem stakeholders
You’ll apply strong analytical skills and collaborate with experienced professionals across diverse sectors.
CHALLENGES TO BE MET
Platform Building
Assist in managing the deal pipeline and providing financial analysis for end-of-period reports
Keep market databases and deal pipeline up to date
Support other team members as appropriate during the life cycle of an investment
Ensure that the investment research files, and other collected information, including legal documentation, are maintained in conformity with our policies and procedures
Ensure that new and existing investment files are properly documented by monitoring investments, amendments, and disbursements, including financial analysis and forecasting
Collaborate with departments at BDC such as Marketing and Public Relations to produce promotional materials and press releases
Leverage research tasks to contribute to the fund’s intellectual capital, by sharing and suggesting insights that support though leadership within the fund’s scope
Deal Sourcing
Accompany senior colleagues at investment community or industry events, forming initial relationships in the ecosystem
Perform market research and scouting to inform the fund’s investment strategy, identifying emerging markets, verticals, technologies, or companies
Conduct initial business plan reviews, support initial communications with entrepreneurs and referring sources, prepare initial interview guides and alignment memo with recommendations to pursue or decline
Deal Making
Support due diligence analysis on companies’ market, competition, management, sales, products, cap table, and anything that is relevant to determining potential business value and exit strategies
Manage operational tasks in due diligence such as booking meetings, and preparing interview guides
Determine and validate performance metrics, feeding valuation models, forecasts and financial pro-forma
Sustainability Venture Fund
Analyze technical documentation and/or work with technical consultants to evaluate technologies, products, and services
Assist in reference calls with competitors, clients, industry experts, and prospect company’s current or past employees
Conduct routine compliance policy procedures, such as KYC (Know Your Client) and AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and BDC Eligibility
Record information in BDC systems and databases on an ongoing basis
Portfolio Management & Support
Conduct mark-to-market tasks to support the portfolio’s fair value reporting
Monitor portfolio performance, comparing performance to forecasts and models, and relaying potential opportunities and issues to management
Participate occasionally in investee board meetings as an observer, keeping abreast of developments and escalating relevant information to Partners
Assist investees with introductions to potential suppliers, investors, and employees
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Typical Background
Currently pursuing an MBA or bachelor’s degree in commerce, economics, science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Candidates from other academic backgrounds are welcome if they demonstrate strong analytical capabilities.
MBA candidates with 1-3 years of pre-MBA experience in roles involving structured thinking, financial analysis, or technical expertise are preferred. Relevant experience may include, but is not limited to:
Finance roles: venture capital, private equity, investment bank, accounting
Operator roles: technology startups, industry-leading corporation, industry specialist
Advisory roles: consulting, law, corporate strategy, corporate development
Technical Knowledge
Proficiency in Excel, including financial modeling, sensitivity analysis, scenario modeling, and data analysis. Experience with other analytic tools and platforms are an asset
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and PowerPoint
Knowledge and experience with AI tools and techniques, including prompt engineering, generative AI platforms, and automation workflows, is considered an asset
Ability to answer questions politely in the context of a presentation to executive audiences
Technical skills such as coding, chemistry, or electronics are considered assets
Operational knowledge of technical industries is a plus
Bilingualism in French and English is an asset
