POSITION OVERVIEW
The incumbent plays a senior leadership role in supporting BDC Capital to achieve its mission. Reporting to the Executive Vice President (EVP), BDC Capital, this person will be responsible for setting the overall strategic direction for BDC Capital in collaboration with the EVP and the bank’s senior leadership. The Vice-president will also be responsible for all aspects of the operational activities and projects of one of the largest investment funds in the country, ranging from venture capital, private equity and Impact Investments.
CHALLENGES TO BE MET
Strategy and business planning
Lead BDC Capital’s overall strategic planning process, assist in developing strategic initiatives and tracking their deployment.
Lead the execution of the strategy, with an emphasis on mobilizing relevant internal and external stakeholders.
In charge for the team’s ambitious thought leadership and advanced analytics initiatives especially given that BDC Capital is frequently solicited for opinions and analyses by major stakeholders within the Canadian innovation ecosystem.
Thought Leadership and Policy Recommendations
Working in partnership with industry stakeholders proactively establish a Thought Leadership agenda to 1) Provide strategic insights to BDC on how best to address market needs, 2) to share insights with the Investment ecosystem to assist the asset class and 3) to assist share insights to government for policy guidance.
Support the EVP on frequent requests by key stakeholders for information and BDC Capital’s decisions on relevant issues, including drafting speaking points, making timely data pulls, and representing BDC Capital on his behalf
Mine BDC’s best practices and learning experiences into a comprehensible analysis to be share broadly to strength investment skills.
Advanced Analytics Initiative
Expand current analytics program led by the operations team leveraging market and internal data to empower BDC Capital investment professionals
Ensure integrity of data sources particularly Credit Risk Management and portfolio management systems
Create and disseminate timely market insights to investment teams and to relevant market participants drawn from the data including sectoral and investment trends, gaps in the ecosystem, and potential opportunities for investments
Operations and Middle-Office Management
Lead the middle office team to ensure best in class practices for the operational management of investment funds including establishing and ensuring compliance with all necessary and required VC Policies and Procedures; processing of necessary procedures & timely updates such as account updates; and support regular audits.
Support BDC Capital’s DEI initiative including coordination with BDC’s DEI program
Develop appropriate dashboards and periodic operational reports to ensure Management and the Board are adequately informed of key operational and strategic metrics/measures – to properly monitor the business, the market and our impacts.
Establish and maintain a close relationship with head office functions including Human Resources and Marketing and Public Affairs to ensure effective use of resources
Organize relevant training seminars for the BDC Capital team to improve investment skills sets and expertise
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Bachelor's degree in economics or commerce; a graduate degree would be an asset.
Eight to 10 years' relevant experience, including three to five years either as a senior investment professional or executive
Experience in a large strategy consulting firm as well as in the financial sector would be a definite asset
Experience in senior leadership roles, preferably in the VC investment experience
Provides strong leadership and vision to team members on how they contribute to the overall success of BDC Capital
Uses complex, coordinated influencing/negotiation strategies, adapted to people, organizations or the situation
Proven ability to deliver on business objectives in a dynamic context and demonstrated skills and personal agility, acquired in such contexts as: VC investment, investment banking, CFO roles, or corporate strategy
Experience in one or more of the following sectors: venture capital, private equity, investment banking, advanced analytics and data science in finance, and corporate strategy roles in financial institutions
Knowledge of both growth capital and equity investment products
Solid understanding of the metrics and indicators involved in VC and growth capital investments
Representation experience or recognized subject-matter expert in start-ups, VC, growth capital, and innovation ecosystems
Skills
