The base salary range for Contract Lectures hired August 16, 2026 through August 15, 2027 is $79,644.07 to $101,855.82 per annum. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Contract amounts are calculated based on the number of semester hours in the appointment.

Course Description

This course introduces students to the scientific method and builds an appreciation of how this rigorous method can be used to understand both the social and technological aspects of cyber-risk and cybersecurity. Elements of cyber-risk and cybersecurity will be examined from the point of view of confidentiality, integrity, availability, risk, adversarial thinking, and systems thinking. A strong emphasis will be placed on communication, collaborative discovery, and debunking cybersecurity myths through empirical data and scientific research.

Application Requirements

Interested candidates must submit:

  1. A current resume/CV explicitly detailing both professional cybersecurity practice, industry credentials, and instructional history.
  2. A cover letter highlighting how their operational experience meets the "professional equivalency" criteria, specifically focusing on their ability to teach evidence-based cybersecurity, threat actor behavior, and security frameworks conceptually.
  3. Recent teaching evaluations or evidence of successful training and syllabus delivery (if available).

a) A full workload half-sessional appointment is for 15 hours in any one semester.
b) A reduced workload half-sessional appointment is for at least 9 but less than 15 semester hours in any one semester.
c) A part-time hourly appointment / one semester is for less than 9 hours in any one semester.

Evidence may be requested for all categories.

PhD. or equivalent in field related to target course
PhD (or equivalent)

Education & Professional Credentials (Equivalency Clause)

  • A Master’s degree in Cybersecurity, Criminology, Computer Science, Public Policy, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Alternative Professional Equivalency: Candidates who do not hold a Master's degree will be fully considered provided they demonstrate an equivalent combination of advanced professional cybersecurity designations (e.g., CISSP, PMP, CISM, or equivalent), extensive senior-level industry advisory experience, and a proven track record of authoring operational playbooks, frameworks, or contributing to government/provincial cyber roadmap initiatives.

Teaching Experience
Teaching target or similar course at TMU graduate program.
Teaching target or similar course at other university graduate programs.
Teaching target or similar course at TMU undergraduate program or another university undergraduate program.

Teaching & Communication Skills

  • Demonstrated evidence of high-quality teaching, workshop facilitation, or instructional delivery within post-secondary environments or advanced professional cybersecurity programs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a focus on mentoring students through academic hygiene, efficiently digesting complex readings, and running structured classroom debates/discussions.
  • Experience utilizing modern Learning Management Systems (specifically D2L Brightspace) for organizing coursework, managing grading rubrics, and executing online module orientations.

Practice field experience
Current (past 3 years) practice in related fields 6-10 (depends on quality of experience, including relevance to course, level of responsibility, relevant professional accreditation, etc.)
Past (more than 3) years ago) practice in a related field.

Professional, Operational & Ecosystem Experience

  • Significant, current practical experience as a cybersecurity practitioner, operational leader, or strategic advisor within the cyber ecosystem.
  • Deep familiarity with the multi-tiered Canadian cybersecurity landscape (including public-private partnerships, critical infrastructure security, and provincial initiatives).
  • Demonstrated experience translating highly technical operational realities (e.g., network security, firewalls, threat intelligence, and emerging IoT attack surfaces) into conceptual, accessible frameworks for non-technical or foundational audiences.
  • Active engagement with industry-leading frameworks, such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF), threat intelligence modeling, or situational crime prevention models

Currency
Academic publications (refereed) in the past 5 years.
Academic publications more than 5 years ago or current (less than 5 years) professional profile (including professional or academic presentations).
Other demonstrated professional currency (practitioner writing, courses taken).
