The base salary range for Contract Lectures hired August 16, 2026 through August 15, 2027 is $79,644.07 to $101,855.82 per annum. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Contract amounts are calculated based on the number of semester hours in the appointment.

* STANDARD SECTION DEFINITION: Sections that are expected to run based on historical enrolment numbers and student intention data and which are paid based on the terms of the collective agreement. If a standard section is cancelled due to low enrollment, the required notice or payment in lieu of notice of cancellation will be provided.

! STANDBY SECTION DEFINITION: Please note that this package includes both standard section(s) as well as standby section(s). Standard section(s) are those that are expected to run based on historical enrolment numbers and student intention data and which are paid based on the terms of the collective agreement. If a standard section is cancelled due to low enrollment, the required notice or payment in lieu of notice of cancellation will be provided. Standby section(s) are sections that are scheduled and will only be opened if student demand warrants it. Standby sections are those with less likelihood to run than Standard sections based on uncertainty around student demand for the course. The decisions to open Standby sections will be made no later than 1 week before the start of classes. Should a decision be made to not open a standby section, no payment in lieu of notice will be offered. Should a decision be made to open a standby section, the payment for work will be in accordance with the terms of the collective agreement.

Effective May 1, 2022, the University’s Vaccination Policy has been suspended. However, due to the fluid and dynamic nature of the COVID-19 virus, should public health indicators change, the University reserves the right to reinstate the Vaccination Policy, as deemed necessary. Course delivery can be online, in-person or hybrid at the sole discretion of the hiring unit. Candidates hired for in-person courses will be required to carry out their teaching on campus. Candidates teaching remotely are required to have access to the appropriate technology, i.e. computer with camera and microphone and high-speed internet.

Types of positions are as follows:

PT: part-time up to 2 sections
RW: reduced workload 3 to 4 sections
FS: full sessional 5 sections

When submitting your application, you will be required to complete a resume based upon the TRSM Cover Letter and Résumé Template. Your academic or professional qualification will have to be properly demonstrated and documented there.

Applicants who meet TRSM’s minimum qualification standards are further assessed by the corresponding School’s or Department’s Contract Lecturers Appointment Committee.

Department/School Contract Lecturer Appointment Committee Requirements

In addition to the minimum TRSM qualification requirements, the School/Department requires applicants to maintain the following qualifications:

Required:

  • LL.B or J.D.

Preferred:

  • A Doctorate in Law, completed or in progress
  • An LL.M., completed or in progress
  • Related continuing legal education (provide specific details on topics taken this year)
  • Related university level teaching (provide references, student survey results and peer assessments)
  • Called to the Bar
  • Related legal practice (provide details on how your practice is related to position applied for)
  • Recently published academic and/or legal work (attach a sample)
  • Demonstrated evidence of having maintained up-to-date knowledge (including practice skills, where appropriate) in their specific field/discipline; and/or
  • Demonstrated evidence of having maintained academic currency in the specific field/discipline relevant to the course(s) for which the candidate has applied which may include publication in a peer reviewed journal, presentation or attendance at relevant academic conferences;
  • Applicants are requested to submit their currency report, if available.
  • Provide at least one reference.
  • It is recommended that new hires provide, at minimum, two references.

Contract Lecturer Appointment Committees may require demonstration of evidence from any of the following categories:

Education:

  • PhD. or equivalent in a field related to target course
  • PhD (or equivalent)
  • Enrolled in PhD Program (this requires a letter of submission from your supervisor indicating you're actively engaged in completing your PhD and the target date for defense).
  • MBA or equivalent\
  • Terminal degree (PhD) in other discipline
  • Master's degree

Teaching Experience:

  • Teaching target or similar course at Toronto Metropolitan University graduate program.
  • Teaching target or similar course at another university graduate programs.
  • Teaching target or similar course at Toronto Metropolitan University undergraduate program or another university undergraduate program.
  • Teaching target course at College.

Practice field experience:

  • Current (past 6 years) practice in related field 6-10 (depends on quality of experience, including relevance to course, level of responsibility, relevant professional accreditation, etc.)
  • Past (more than 6 years ago) practice in a related field.

Teaching Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience of ability to effectively teach in an online environment which includes demonstrated knowledge of best practices for the delivery and management of online courses, including using course management system tools to communicate with students and to foster and support a collaborative online learning community with and between students in the course.
  • Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of personal computers that are relevant to this course, including document creation, file management, internet research, and communications.
  • TMU has discontinued its Faculty Course Survey and adopted a five-question Course Operation Survey (COS) that assesses the student experience in the course that is utilized by teaching faculty in the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association. The COS is not to be used to assess teaching effectiveness in the Contract Lecturer hiring process.

Currency:

  • Academic publications (refereed) in the past 6 years.
  • Academic publications more than 6 years ago or current (6 years or less)
  • Professional profile (including professional or academic presentations).
  • Other demonstrated professional currency (practitioner writing, courses taken)

Interactive Skills:

The following will be rated based on previous teaching ratings/evaluations:

  • Lecture presentation
  • Email Interaction
  • Follow through with assignments

Applicant Responsibilities:

  1. The type of appointment that is preferred.
  2. The courses or number of sections of the same course and/or package(s) they would like to teach
  3. Attach an updated professional or academic resume which corresponds with the applicant’s qualifications as outlined in the “Minimum Qualifications for Applicants” document as well as any other relevant information concerning their candidacy.
  4. Which courses of all those posted by the Department the candidates consider themselves qualified to teach. (If possible, include the number of times the course content of each of the applied-for courses has been taught).
  5. The address or addresses to which the letter of appointment should be sent, and any periods when the candidates cannot be contacted.
  6. Contract Lecturers with priority of consideration may include which of the Continuing Education credit courses they would prefer should the volume of teaching applied for not be available from the teaching functions available to discharge.
  7. Evidence of having demonstrated skills/ability to teach effectively in a University environment (please include recent student evaluations with your application).
  8. Acceptable teaching assessments from any formal classroom visits by an assessor (provide most recent assessor’s teaching evaluations or equivalent combination demonstrating ability to teach effectively.)
