Perimeter Institute invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the intersection of Theoretical Physics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) (a rank equivalent to the level of assistant professor). Exceptional candidates may be considered for a tenured senior faculty appointment.

We welcome applicants whose research explores any aspect of the physics of AI or the application of AI to physics, broadly defined. The rapidly evolving interface between physics and AI represents an exciting frontier in modern quantitative science. The physics of AI investigates the theoretical foundations of learning systems to explain why AI models work. Conversely, AI for physics leverages probabilistic modeling and machine learning to accelerate physical discovery.

The new faculty member will play a leading role in advancing Perimeter’s initiatives in this emerging field and in fostering connections with related research areas across the institute, within Waterloo’s rich scientific ecosystem, and surrounding universities in Southern Ontario.

If applicable, the successful applicant may also be considered for appointment to the Vector Institute, a world-class environment for artificial intelligence research, supported by government and private industry in partnership with Ontario Universities.

Perimeter Institute is a leading global centre for fundamental research in theoretical physics. The Institute offers an exceptional research environment and is currently staffed with 28 Research Faculty, 19 Research Associate Faculty, and more than 150 Postdoctoral Researchers and Graduate Students. The Institute’s very active visitor, seminar, conference, and workshop programs attract over 1,800 visitors each year. Perimeter’s research efforts include quantum matter, cosmology, mathematical physics, quantum fields and strings, quantum foundations, quantum gravity, quantum information, strong gravity, and particle physics.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field as well as postdoctoral experience, and must have demonstrated exceptional strength in independent research. The starting annual salary for this position ranges from $150,000 to $160,000 CDN. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates. Annual salary increases are determined by performance and contributions to the organization. Perimeter’s compensation philosophy emphasizes fairness and transparency, ensuring alignment with both internal equity and external market benchmarks. Salary ranges are regularly reviewed and updated to remain competitive and equitable.

The effective date of appointment is September 1, 2026, or another mutually agreed-upon date in 2026.

Interested candidates are asked to submit their curriculum vitae, list of publications, and a research statement. They must also arrange to have at least three letters of recommendation submitted, following the instructions provided on the application page. Applicants for a senior position can alternatively provide the names of three (3) references in place of letters.

Consideration of applications will begin on February 1, 2026. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. Perimeter Institute is committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from racialized persons, women, Indigenous/Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ2S+ persons, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.

Perimeter Institute provides support throughout the application process for applicants with disabilities. We work with you to understand the impact of your disability to appropriately accommodate you during the application/interview process.
