Posted on Nov 22, 2025

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Physics Department (https://www.physics.wisc.edu/) and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (https://perimeterinstitute.ca/) invite applications for a joint 3-year postdoctoral position in AI for theoretical physics. The selected postdoc will spend the first year at UW Madison and the following two years at Perimeter Institute, with frequent travels in both directions. We are looking for candidates with a background in any area of theoretical physics and a strong interest in AI Reasoning. Prior publications in AI for physics are a bonus but not required.

We are broadly interested in doing theoretical physics with AI Reasoning models. Topics of interest include:

  • Agentic approaches and test-time scaling methods.
  • Symbolic verification and tool usage.
  • Methods for novel research in theoretical physics with LLMs (e.g. combining LLMs with tree search or evolutionary algorithms).
  • Developing training and benchmarking data (e.g. https://tpbench.org/).
  • Fine-tuning of models with Reinforcement learning.

In Madison, the postdoc will work in particular with the groups of Moritz Münchmeyer (https://munchmeyer.physics.wisc.edu/) and Gary Shiu (https://shiu.physics.wisc.edu/), and join an ongoing collaboration between physicists and computer scientists. At Perimeter Institute, the postdoc will be free to work with any faculty member. For questions about the position, please contact Moritz Münchmeyer at UW Madison (muenchmeyer@wisc.edu) or Kendrick Smith at Perimeter Institute (kmsmith@perimeterinstitute.ca).

To apply, please submit a Research Statement, CV, Publication List and three reference letters by December 8, 2025.
