Duties

DUTIES:
Assists in and/or performs quality control activities as specified for the forensic analyses conducted.
Assists in and/or performs maintenance, calibration, verification and operation of scientific equipment and any accessories.
Assists in and/or performs ordering of materials and prepares reagents for laboratory analyses.
Assists in the conduct of routine forensic analyses, assesses results and reports observations in writing.
Assist in and/or performs organizing and managing of laboratory inventory.

Work environment

Work is normally conducted in a laboratory environment where there is exposure to a variety of occupational hazards (biological, chemical, physical), some of which are not readily identifiable and as such an awareness of these risks must be maintained and appropriate safety procedures observed. As part of the criminal investigation process, there is lack of control over the pace of work and there is no tolerance for error.

There is a mandatory requirement to work in person in the office five (5) days a week.

National DNA Data Bank

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff similar positions within the RCMP in the National Capital Region, Edmonton, AB and Surrey, BC on an indeterminate or specified period (including term, acting, or assignment) basis, with various linguistic profiles and various RCMP security clearances.

Should a Civilian Member (CM) be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to the Public Service (PS) category for the CM

Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical, or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience preparing and disposing of various solutions and reagents
Experience with the day-to-day maintenance, calibration and verification of instruments and equipment
Experience ordering materials and supplies to contribute to uninterrupted service
Experience handling a variety of firearms such as: rifles, pistols, revolvers, shotguns, military & police automatic firearms and commercial sporting firearms

Knowledge:
Knowledge of Quality Assurance and Quality Control
Knowledge of safe handling practices for firearms.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
(may change during the candidate’s term in section)

Willingness and ability to travel for work related assignments.
Willingness and ability to work in a police environment, including exposure to unsettling and graphic material, on a daily basis.
Willingness and ability to work shifts and overtime.

Conditions of employment

• Work with hazardous materials, chemicals, and firearms
• Work with and be exposed to biological and chemical samples and lead hazards
• Wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment
• Maintain standing or sitting positions for extended periods
• Move and lift items (up to 20kg)
• Adhere to laboratory safety standards and procedures
• Work in cold rooms for limited periods in order to retrieve samples
• Must be willing and able to testify in a court of law anywhere in Canada
• Work with and be exposed to material from crime scenes
• Must have a valid driver’s license

This position is comprised of an in-house training program. As part of the conditions of employment, the appointed candidate must successfully complete the in-house training program.

Medical Profile: The candidate must obtain and maintain a valid medical clearance

Security Clearance: RCMP Enhanced Reliability Status
