The Canadian Forest service is hiring two Physical Scientist - Ecosystem Analysts. The positions will engage with projects investigating the effects of forestry, climate-change, and natural disturbances on multiple forest values including timber supply, carbon accounting, and habitat for species at risk. Using a combination of remotely sensed data, field data and simulations, the positions will analyze spatial and temporal forest dynamics to investigate relationships between forest conditions and disturbances. The work will also compare among management and climate-change scenarios to identify optimal actions for achieving management outcomes in the context of current and future forest conditions. The work requires extensive experience with information technology including use of multiple programming languages including Python, Java and R in both standalone and integrated modeling frameworks. An understanding of forest ecology, forestry inventory data, landscape simulation, remote sensing, and geographic information systems is required for the work.

Intent of the process

The intent of the process is to staff one (1) position for a (2) year specified period. A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the PC-02 group and level within Natural Resources Canada.

Education
• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in physics, computer science, geology, chemistry or other science discipline relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience
· Compiling, synthesizing and analyzing statistical information and big datasets from diverse sources
· Using several computer programming languages
· Manipulating, interpreting, processing and/or analyzing large data
· Recent (i.e. within the last 2 years) experience coding analytical projects
