Duties

The Wireless Communication Network (WCN) & Applied Technology Unit maintains a wide range of technologies in support of police operations and specialized RCMP groups. WCN provides technical support to a variety of fixed, mobile and portable radio platforms, including the installation, repair and maintenance of in-car camera, vehicle radio extenders, radar systems and peripheral equipment. The area of responsibility also extends to the computer-aided dispatch systems positioned within the 911 Call Center and to the communication systems, which are installed at the numerous detachments and remote locations situated within the province of Manitoba.

Intent of the process

To fill vacant IT02 position in Winnipeg and one vacant IT02 position in Dauphin. A qualified pool of candidates may be established and may be used to staff this position or similar positions or for future term, acting, assignment, secondment, deployment, or indeterminate opportunities.

Should a Civilian Member (CM) be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to the Public Service (PS) category for the CM.

Graduation from a two-year program of study from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in computer science, information technology, information management or another specialty relevant to the position to be staffed.
** Note:

Indeterminate incumbents in the IT group on December 9, 2021 who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standard based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing positions in the IT group.
2. Indeterminate incumbents of positions in the CS group on May 10, 1999, who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standard based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing positions in the IT group.
3. At the manager’s discretion, an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may serve as an alternative to the minimum education stated above. Whenever the minimum education is met using this alternative, it is met for the specific position only and must be re-assessed for other positions for which this alternative has been specified by the manager.

Degree equivalency

Experience in repairing and maintaining wireless land mobile radio voice and data communications equipment.

Experience with electronic communications test equipment and test procedures.

Experience writing reports for higher management or clients.

Experience in computer system architecture, software and operational practices in data processing.

Experience in repair and maintenance of modern Land Mobile Radio Networks.

Conditions of employment

RCMP Top Secret level security clearance
Willingness and ability to travel throughout the service area (Manitoba) for extended period of time as required, sometimes on short notice and often by small plane to remote sites.
Willingness and ability to work in areas exposed to inclement weather and occasional uncomfortable working locations.
Willingness and ability to climb ladders and to work at a height.
Willingness and ability to work overtime to support operational activities or systems, sometimes on short notice.
Willingness and ability to lift and carry heavy tools and equipment (ex: minimum 50lbs).
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
Willingness and ability to work in confined areas
