Duties

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), more precisely, the Maurice Lamontagne Institute and the University of Quebec at Rimouski (UQAR) are launching a call for applications for a master's degree, the first two years of which will be financed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (via the Research Assistant Program) and the last year by UQAR. This is a project aimed at understanding the links between physiology, genetics and the impacts of climate change on invasions of green crab (Carcinus maenas) in Quebec. The master's degree will be carried out in collaboration between the Marine Ecological and Evolutionary Physiology laboratory of Professor Piero Calosi and the Scientific Program on Marine Aquatic Invasive Species of Fisheries and Oceans of Dr. Kathleen MacGregor. The main objectives of this project are:
📌(1) To define green crab thermal tolerance thresholds across multiple traits (i.e. survival, behavioral, morphological, physiological, molecular), developmental stages (i.e. adult female and males, larvae) and lineages (cold-adapted, hot-adapted, hybrids), already present in the Maritimes and which are gradually spreading north into Quebec;
📌(2) Generate thermal preference maps for the study area by using biological thresholds; and
📌(3) Use historical data from the invasive species monitoring program combined with biological thresholds from (1) and maps from (2) to explain variations in abundance and population structure at monitored sites.
