Duties
As a member of the Canadian Conservation Institute team, you will play a vital role in the management and conservation of Canada’s heritage places and collections. Depending on the position you apply for, you could be responsible for:
- Providing expert advice on the conservation of heritage buildings, components, finishes, artifacts, furnishings, and decorative arts;
- Conducting comprehensive site assessments, identifying conservation needs, recommending tailored strategies, and overseeing the documentation and management of collections to prevent deterioration;
- Contributing to risk assessment processes, leading research on innovative conservation techniques, and coordinating heritage conservation projects.
- Guiding project strategies through research and analysis, managing projects, facilitating collaboration among stakeholders, and ensuring that project milestones are achieved within established timelines and resources.
- Mentoring junior staff, developing innovative frameworks, advocating for advanced conservation methodologies, and leading training programs and workshops.
Work environment
These positions are subject to the hybrid work model. In general, employees appointed to these positions should expect to work three days a week starting September 9th, 2024, from their designated location, and subject to operational requirements. Our office is located at 1030 Innes Road, Ottawa.
Intent of the process
The intention of this process is to fill 3 positions on a permanent basis among the following roles:
At the GT-04 group and level, 2 different positions are available:
1. Assistant Heritage Conservation Advisor - Built Heritage; and
2. Heritage Project Coordinator - Heritage Conservation.
At the GT-06 group and level, 2 different positions are available:
1. Heritage Conservation Advisor - Collections Management; and
2. Heritage Conservation Advisor - Built Heritage.
At the GT-07 group and level, 1 position is available:
Senior Heritage Conservation Advisor - Collections Management.
A pool of candidates could be created and used to fill other similar positions within the department for a variety of durations (indeterminate or temporary).

An essential qualification is mandatory for the work to be performed. Be sure you have these qualifications when you apply.
Education (essential qualification):
Diploma from a post-secondary institution in a field relevant to the position, or an acceptable combination of education, experience, and (or) training.
Diploma is defined as: a college or a baccalaureate, as established by educational authorities. Fields relevant to the position are heritage conservation, conservation, architecture, engineering or building science. An acceptable combination would be a high school diploma in combination with a few years of relevant work experience and professional development courses.
Experience (essential qualifications):
The two following experiences are essential for all the positions:
1. Experience planning, implementing, and managing built heritage conservation projects, focusing on reducing risks to heritage buildings, architectural components, and decorative treatments (including furnishings, objects and finishes).
2. Experience conducting comprehensive assessments and documentation of heritage assets, including heritage buildings, architectural components, and decorative treatments (including furnishings, objects and finishes), to inform conservation strategies and management practices.
The following experience is essential for all positions except Heritage Project Coordinator - Heritage Conservation (GT-04):
3. Experience providing technical or strategic advice to clients or senior management on complex issues relating to policy, programs or activities.
The following experience is essential for the Senior Heritage Conservation Advisor - Collections Management (GT-07) position only:
4. Experience leading multidisciplinary teams, including scientists, conservators or other disciplines related to heritage conservation.

An asset qualification is not mandatory for the job. You may still apply for this position even if you do not possess the asset qualifications. Please note that an asset qualification could become an essential qualification depending on the positions to be filled.
Education (asset qualification):
Master or PhD degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field relevant to the position. Fields relevant to the position are heritage conservation, conservation, architecture, engineering or building science.
Experience (asset qualifications):
1. Experience capital projects and working within active construction sites.
2. Experience using a quantitative risk analysis method for cultural heritage (for example, ABC Method, CPRAM).
3. Experience applying the RE-ORG methodology in a storage reorganization project.
4. Experience developing or delivering training or developing didactic material.
5. Experience working with or within Indigenous communities or organizations.
6. Experience using collection records and databases and applying vocabulary controls for terminology standardization.
7. Experience writing policy or planning documents.
8. Experience in data management for the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations (AECO) industry.
9. Experience evaluating or developing technical content for contract documents or specifications.
10. Experience in documentation and sampling techniques related to architectural coatings research.
11. Experience monitoring and tracking project budgets and financial resources.
Knowledges (asset qualifications):
1. Knowledge of the heritage landscape in Canada, including Indigenous issues.
2. Knowledge of the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.
3. In-depth knowledge of fabrication and construction technologies.
