There is one Full-Time permanent Life Skills Coach, Safe Haven position available starting on October 27, 2024, working 37.5 hours per week.

Your Role:

Supervises, monitors, supports and counsels clients throughout their participation in the program. Works in partnership with multidisciplinary teams, to facilitate safe and goal-focused programs for clients. Supports the implementation of evidence-informed practices including Trauma Informed Care, Housing First Model and Attachment theory. Assumes responsibility for meeting the dietary and food service requirements of the youth. Provides guidance to youth and staff in all dietary and food preparation procedures. Works intentionally from an anti-racist, anti-oppressive perspective to further create a sense of belonging at the Agency.

Tasks:

Client Service:

  1. Supervises, monitors, supports, and counsels clients throughout Life Skills (specifically life skills relating to budgeting, cooking, baking, food safety, nutrition, grocery shopping, healthy living, menu planning) components of the program.
  2. Assesses, develops and implements plan of actions and objectives for the group and individual life skills programming, establishing norms and structures that provide a safe and growth-focused environment.
  3. Assesses, develops, and implements goals and objectives with individual clients relating to life skills
  4. Counsels’ clients in individual and group settings
  • Responds to client crisis situations utilizing crisis intervention and Crisis Intervention Techniques; as well as an antiracist, anti-oppressive lens in understanding the trauma history of the client.
  1. Liaises with client, family, police, educational staff and other agencies ensuring communication, continuity and support. Establish relationships with local grassroots organizations and community gathering spaces to provide clients with opportunity to access to cultural supports.
  2. Participates with members of the clients' multidisciplinary team, Program Supervisor and other Agency personnel in coordinating and implementing life skills programming.
  3. Participates in developing, implementing and evaluating client needs assessments and contracts.
  4. Develops and delivers life skills programming.
  5. Supports clients to off-site appointments and activities in the community.
  6. Administers medication and attends to clients’ medical needs.
  7. Role models the Agency’s values for staff members and clients.
  8. Participates in designing, delivering and evaluating life skills programming.
  9. Participates in assessing, developing, and implementing action plans and support in the community. This includes utilizing evidence informed models.
  10. Develops and promotes specialized programs (safety contracts, housing plans, etc.).
  11. Responds to the client utilizing crisis intervention strategies, de-escalation techniques.
  12. Completes various screening tools, e.g. YAP and HEADS ED or Suicide Risk Assessment seen as appropriate in determining the next course of action.
  13. Supports the crisis management service plan in a proactive manner, utilizing family/guardian strengths and resources augmented with community resources.

Food Handling and Preparation:

  1. Purchases, Orders, Prepares and offers food services that are well balanced, attractive and meet the dietary needs of the residents.
  2. Prepares well-balanced meals that comply with Canada’s Food Guide following a menu cycle.
  3. Offers a variety of healthy snack options to enhance diet and encourages healthy living.
  4. Ensures food is safely stored and properly labeled and dated to avoid spoilage and facilitate proper rotation.
  5. Prepares quality food in appropriate quantities to stay within the budget
  6. Prepares food within scheduled time constraints.
  7. Ensures that dietary requirements to meet individualized dietary plans are adhered to
  8. Ensures that meals and snacks are presented to maximize visual appeal, taste and texture.
  9. Ensures that meals are served at proper temperatures.
  10. Ensures that all youth receive appropriate portions according to dietary plans and requirements.
  11. Monitors food preparation and presentation to ensure high standards.
  12. Maintains standards to control inventory and food costs without compromising food quality.
  13. Informs the Program Manager of appliance and other equipment breakdown.
  14. Coordinates and participates in the proper cleaning of the dining room, kitchen, and serving areas including but not limited to tables and bases, chairs, floor, serving carts, trays, kitchen equipment, counter tops
  15. Ensures all meals are served as scheduled.
  16. Works within legislated requirements for proper food handling, WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety, infection control, lifting techniques and disinfecting and cleaning requirements.
  17. Adheres to Public Health regulations and ministry standards
  18. Ensures the safety and security of the kitchen and compliance with Health and Safety, food services standards and the Health Protection and Promotion Act

Administration:

  1. Monitors group food budgets
  2. Collects information, records and maintains client files and updates client and shift data.
  3. Oversees and monitors safety, general repair, maintenance, and cleanliness in the facility, reporting deficiencies to Leadership or Maintenance Department.
  4. Monitors the security of the facility.
  5. Provides additional back-up support, as needed, in order to deliver program activities.
  6. Communicates relevant client information and needs to internal and external team members.
  7. Build and maintain positive relationships with community partners
  8. Integrates and monitors volunteers within the overall program.
  9. Accepts and processes all donations and generating acknowledgment correspondence.
  10. Works with the Program Manager to monitor food and supplies inventory and ensures supplies are maintained.
  11. Submits weekly food bank order
  12. Receives all food and supplies and checks food bank delivery
  13. Assist in the planning of menus.
  14. Maintains the confidentiality of information relating to residents and their families.

Your Talents and Experience:

A relevant degree or diploma in child and youth work or related discipline with a minimum of one year working in a milieu setting as a Child and Youth Worker. Demonstrated ability to relate to youth with warmth and understanding and setting consistent appropriate limits. Highly developed professional, verbal and written skills, with a demonstrated ability to deal with a diverse range of people. Formal training in food preparation and service. Can read, write and communicate clearly with youth and staff. Must be able to perform mathematical calculations for recipe scaling and calculating portions. Has had previous experience assisting with new menu preparation for quantity cooking. Has a solid understanding of how to use and maintain kitchen equipment. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team while still demonstrating strong decision-making capabilities. Exceptional organizational skills and the capability of multi-tasking to meet various timelines are essential. Alignment with the Agency's commitment to anti racism, anti-oppression and equity. Passionate, aware, and willing to continue to learn about antiracism, anti-oppression and equity. First Aid Certificate, CPR, and CIT training.

  • Rate of Pay: At Starling Community Services all salaries are categorized under a series of "bands" determined during our job evaluation process. When determining rate of pay for external hires, a candidate’s past related experience will be taken into consideration along with where others with similar experience currently fall within the band.

  • Job Band G (hourly wages): Min - $26.62, Mid - $28.83, Max - $32.54
