PROFILE
We are currently seeking a Law Clerk to join our Debt Recovery team on a 12 month contract. Working within a team environment, the debt recovery clerk assists professionals by completing due diligence searches, preparing legal documents and other tasks involved in managing the file in banking, bankruptcy and debtor-creditor law.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receives directions from the professional on the strategy of the file and the steps required for the conduct of the file, and instructions to meet critical deadlines.
 - Completes searches using ONCORP (i.e. Corporate Profile Reports, Execution Searches, PPSA searches, bankruptcy searches) and Teraview.
 - Drafts a variety of documents based on precedents and/or directions, including demand letters and statutory notices, pleadings, forms, contracts, agreements, and correspondence to meet the needs of the professionals throughout the conduct of the file, in accordance with legislation and/or governing regulations.
 - Assists the professional to ensure that each action on the file conforms to the requirements and timelines of the Courts and/or Governing Tribunals or other Government Department.
 - Systematically organizes, tracks and maintains paper and electronic document files and case correspondence, using, where appropriate, computer databases and imaging software.
 - Coordinates key steps on the file and initiates follow up actions where and when necessary.
 - Assists the professional in preparing documents required in the litigation process, such as statements of claim, default judgments, client affidavits, etc.
 - Liaises with client to obtain documents and information and provide information when directed by the professional.
 - Communicates directly with service providers and judicial/tribunal officials in connection with the client’s file.
 - Prepares reports on an as needed basis.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
- Law Clerk/Paralegal or Legal Assistant Diploma/Certificate.
 - Three years experience as a Law Clerk/Paralegal.
 - Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
 - Understanding and strict adherence to client confidentiality and privacy concerns.
 - Ability to communicate effectively with other Firm members, with the aptitude to take care of clients’ needs in a professional and courteous manner.
 - Capacity to work independently, as well as in a team environment.
 - Some familiarity with relevant legislation and government regulations, including the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, the Farm Debt Mediation Act, the Mortgages Act, the Executions Act, the Personal Property Security Act, and the Rules of Civil Procedure.
 - In depth knowledge of legal terminology and principles.
 - The ability to analyze legal documents for accuracy.
 - Produce a high quality and quantity of work product, occasionally under tight timelines.
 - Able to prioritize and to redefine priorities when necessary.
 - Calm and business-like under occasional pressure.
 - Comfortable with telephone conversation and an aptitude for remaining relaxed and confident during calls with unfamiliar people.
 - Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite and PDF editing software.
