In addition to completing environmental site assessments (ESAs) of impacted commercial and industrial sites you will also be part of GHD’s Fast Incident Response Services Team (GHD FIRST), Canada’s largest spill consultant emergency-based spill preparedness and response business in Canada. CAR and GHD FIRST service many industries like oil & gas, pipelines, rail, pulp & paper, mining, manufacturing, insurance, defense and transportation across North America. We are looking for dedicated individuals with strong problem-solving skills who are interested in joining other highly performing individuals to join our team!
Who are we looking for?
We are seeking an experienced Environmental Technician / Technologist with 5+ years of experience in Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), remediation, soil and groundwater sampling to join our dynamic CAR and FIRST team. This role is based out of our Edmonton, AB office and involves travel primarily across Western Canada in support of both 24/7 emergency incident response and environmental projects. The ideal candidate will be competent in executing field investigations including Phase I ESAs, Phase II ESAs, soil monitoring and management programs, remediation, groundwater and surface water monitoring programs.
This individual will have experience in ground disturbance clearance, drilling, test pitting and hand augering for procuring soil and sediment samples, sampling air and soil vapour, and will be able to perform installation, monitoring, sampling and hydraulic measurements in groundwater monitoring wells. They will be expected to assist in the field and office with a range of environmental response, assessment, remediation activities, supervise and direct field subcontractors ensuring work is completed within approved scope, schedule and budget. Collection and documentation of quality field data is expected and assistance in the preparation of technical reports will be required. As part of this position the individual will work alongside a team of Project Managers, Project Directors, clients and subcontractors.
Our Hybrid Work Model:
Our workplace thrives on a hybrid model involving a combination of in-office collaboration and the flexibility of working remotely. If not positioned in the field (e.g. BC, AB, SK, MB etc.) join us in the office three days a week to contribute, connect and excel in our vibrant working environment. Work from home occasionally to allow convenience and enhance focus time when needed. Field work is required in this role with an estimated 60% field / 40% office time split.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
- Contaminated Sites Investigation and Remediation Design: Design (or enable others while being accountable for) engineering and scientific solutions to bring sites to closure through assessment, remediation and/or risk assessment, that conforms to organizational and/or regulatory standards.
- Team Collaboration - participate in a team environment working closely with other Project Technologists, Project Coordinators, Project Managers, Senior Project Directors and Technical Leads to progress contaminated sites of various industries towards closure.
- Field Supervision: Provide effective supervision of field subcontractors for the safe, efficient, accurate execution of field programs. to ensure timely delivery of services meeting client and project requirements.
- Data Collection and Processing: Accurate documentation of field data from site conditions, to borehole logs, to diagrams and field measurements.
- Participation in projects from proposal through to execution in accordance with our project management and quality performance metrics.
- Client & Customer Management (External): Maintaining important client relationships and engaging with industry networks; working with your Team Leader to ensure delivery of an enhanced client experience.
- Health, Safety, Quality and Environment: Maintaining health, safety, quality and environment key performance indicators (KPIs) and positive patterns of HSE behavior. Take action to improve performance and to resolve noncompliance with the organization's policies, procedures, and mandatory instructions.
- Culture of Innovation: Drive a culture of innovation by providing multistakeholder solutions that boost creativity, innovation, and collaboration across business units.
What you will bring to the team:
- Technician or Technologist certificate or diploma in environmental science or related discipline
- 5 to 10 years of experience with contaminated site assessments, remediation and reclamation
- Expertise in field assessments, technical reporting and project management
- Knowledge of provincial and federal legislation and regulatory requirements surrounding contaminated sites in Alberta
- Ability and drive to work in the field at multiple locations with the potential for inclement weather
- Self-motivated with strong time management and organizational ability
- Strong communication and writing skills in English with a collaborative mindset
- Strong safety awareness
- Excellent computer skills, record keeping and attention to detail
- Valid driver's license
