Due to ongoing demand from companies and regulators to comply with the GISTM and CDA standards, GHD is now seeking an experienced Technical Director – Tailings, Dams and Geotechnical based in Fredericton to complement our existing global Tailings and Dams service lines. GHD has a significant presence across the Asia-Pacific and North American regions providing tailings and mine waste management services to Tier-1 mining clients, and demand from these clients in Canada, the United States, and other regions is increasing considerably.

As the technical lead for tailings and hydrotechnical dams, you will be responsible for leading technical teams on projects ranging from small to large. You will also work within GHD’s broader global tailings and dams communities on planning, investigation, and design projects for tailings storage facilities and hydroelectric projects. These projects may be located in multiple geographic regions.

You will also have the opportunity to share your knowledge through the GHD Tailings School, our highly regarded global online training course for professionals.

Location: Fredericton

The role requires detailed knowledge of CDA, GISTM, MAC, local regulations, and other industry guidelines, as well as established connections across industry networks. Ideally, you will have extensive experience in planning, design, construction, and governance services for tailings dams.

Working with an energetic and high-performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:

  • Geoscientific studies and interpretation: Develop proposals for selecting exploration drill locations by overseeing all aspects of tailings modelling and leading the data interpretation process.
  • Engineering design solutions: Design of tailings and hydro dams, including foundations, embankment stability, hydraulic analyses, and liquefaction assessments.
  • Technical Developments Recommendations: Discuss and recommend more complex or innovative technical developments to improve quality, tools, and supporting infrastructure to better meet user needs.
  • Data management: Manage key aspects of the data management system, including developing and/or operating core components of the system.
  • Project management, data collection and analysis: Provide technical leadership—often within multidisciplinary teams—through planning, feasibility, and detailed design phases, and identify potential impacts to the business.
  • Exploration plan development: Undertake and lead geotechnical investigations; carry out dam safety inspections and associated risk assessments.
  • Research: Develop and/or provide a plan for significant aspects of a research program, with support from senior colleagues.
  • Knowledge management: Develop policies and processes, create best practices, build case studies, and organize internal knowledge-sharing sessions to capture and share learnings across colleagues on regional and international project/program outcomes and innovative practices within a specific area of expertise.
  • Personal capability building: Act as an expert for the team in a technological, policy, regulatory, or operational management area. Maintain external accreditations and a deep understanding of current and emerging external regulations and industry best practices through continuing education, conference participation, and industry publications. Mentor and train other GHD staff.
  • Client and Customer management (external): Develop relationships with clients nationally and internationally by leveraging your established networks.

What you will bring to the team:

  • University degree in Engineering (Civil or Geotechnical)
  • Post-graduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering are an asset
  • Hold a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license (or eligibility to obtain licensure in New Brunswick)
  • Significant experience (15+ years) in tailings dams, hydroelectric projects, and mine waste engineering—ideally in a consulting environment.
