Who are we looking for?

GHD's Engineering Design Organization is seeking a Senior Civil Design Technician. This role can be based in any of GHD’s Western Canadian offices (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton).

Working with an energetic and high-performing team, this position offers a variety of opportunities and will see you involved in:

  • Producing conceptual and detailed design drawings for a wide variety of civil and water infrastructure projects, including linear utility modelling, site grading and site servicing plan modelling/design, road and rail corridor design and modelling, and transit stations.
  • Oversee or produce design work in an integrated 3D environment that focuses on quality and meets or exceeds company and industry quality standards
  • Applying technical knowledge and coordination skills to solve problems on complex multi-disciplinary projects
  • Act as a technical lead for a defined scope of work
  • Coordination with multiple business groups within GHD, subconsultants and external agencies
  • Contribute to the development of proposals
  • Being a trusted mentor to more junior team members with the potential to supervise their performance and career development

Candidates’ career experiences may consist of:

  • Extensive experience with 3D model development, completing design, general arrangement drawing production, redlining, annotating and drafting.
  • Experience with water, sanitary, and storm infrastructure design.
  • Extensive experience of using corridor and pipe network module in Civil 3D.
  • Extensive experience with 3D model development, completing design, general arrangement production, redlining, annotating and drafting.
  • Experience and working knowledge of AutoTURN or Autodesk Vehicle tracking
  • Mentoring and supervising junior and developing Technicians.
  • Providing support and training to junior and developing Techs on on Civil 3D and project BIM standards and procedures.
  • Producing consistent, high quality civil deliverables.
  • Large and small team collaboration. Communication with other disciplines, sub-consultants, municipalities, utility companies, stakeholders and clients
  • Strong experience with geometric design, including alignments, profiles, corridor modeling, and cross section development
  • Understanding of geometric design principles i.e. TAC Geometric Guidelines, BC Supplement to TAC, Master Municipal Construction Documents (MMCD), BC Manual of Standard Traffic Signs and Pavement Markings
  • Assist with the development of specifications, cost estimates, technical reports and tender documents
  • Coordinate with the design team to achieve quality deliverables within the established schedule and budget
  • Experience in design delivery within both conventional and alternative project delivery models is considered an asset

What you will bring to the team:

  • 10+ years of civil design and modelling experience
  • Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering
  • Professional Engineer/Technologist registered or eligible for registration in Alberta and/or British Columbia
  • Proven record of site grading, site servicing, drainage and access road design using the civil 3D software, preparation of all plans, sections, profiles and details drawings (Mandatory).
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills (both oral and written), with the ability to interact effectively within all levels of the organization in a collaborative fashion
  • Experience managing multiple tasks while maintaining a high degree of attention to detail in a demanding consulting environment
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and delegate work in order to meet required deadlines while complying with procedures and best practices.
  • Experience with Construction Administration & Inspection are considered assets
  • Interest or experience with new design tools and technologies such as BIM platforms, design programming, visualizations and automation are considered assets
