What we are looking for:
We are looking for a Lead Electrical Engineer - Nuclear to any of our GTA and/or Waterloo offices to join the Engineering Design Organization (EDO) group.
As a member of the multidiscipline design team, the successful candidate will lead complex design projects for the electrical discipline, coordinate with the larger project team and play a crucial role in optimizing GHD’s electrical teams. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in close collaboration with clients and stakeholders, regularly visit job sites and work in Owner’s Engineer capacity when requested, ensuring successful completion and project delivery within budget and schedule while maintaining a high standard of quality. In addition, expectations will include quick adaptation to different clients’ design standards, regularly working on pursuits, mentoring and/or supervising junior staff, development of team standards and working with business groups to maintain client satisfaction as required.

Working with an energetic and high-performing team, this position offers a variety of duties and will see you involved in:
- Serving as electrical discipline lead on nuclear projects and lead project-specific teams comprised of other engineers, designers and drafters.
- Writing proposals and developing level of effort estimates.
- Interpreting client standards and specifications, performing design calculations, distributing work within the electrical project team and participating in interdisciplinary coordination.
- Developing design documents including but not limited to preliminary design reports, technical memorandums, detail design packages including electrical drawings, specifications, bill of materials, process narratives, construction sequence, equipment procurement documents and sub-contractor requisitions.
- Technical design documentations will include but not limited to: Load Lists, Power demand summaries (both normal and emergency power), Backup power distribution system, temporary power and permanent electrical service plans, cable routing, duct bank layouts, electrical site plans, transformer sizing, electrical equipment sizing such as transformers, switchboards, switchgears, MCCs, distribution panelboards, electrical studies such as short circuit and arc flash.
- Participating in internal and external meetings, prepare progress reports, and take responsibility to ensure design is completed within allocated budget and schedule.
- Technical review and quality control of design drawings and documents; Providing quality assurance, check design packages and adhere to GHD QA/QC processes.
- Professional sealing of technical documents.
- Leading electrical project teams throughout project phases and monitoring schedule, quality of deliverable and budgets.
- Providing support during tendering and construction including responding to RFIs, assisting GHD and client site personnel, reviewing shop drawings, evaluating electrical reports (short circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash, ground potential rise (GPR), harmonics, etc), completing site inspections, preparing testing plans, preparation and evaluation of change orders and participation in construction meetings.
- Ensuring compliance with Canadian electrical codes and standards, relevant industry standards and regulations. Coordination and liaison with clients and approving authorities.
What you´ll bring to the team:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering required; Master’s Degree or equivalent preferred.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario; P.Eng. in other provinces or PMP certification considered assets.
- PMP designation is an asset.
- Minimum 15+ years of relevant experience working on and/or leading nuclear projects.
- Demonstrated experience working on medium and/or large-scale projects designing nuclear power generation systems, substations within a consulting environment.
- Excellent knowledge of Canadian electrical codes and standards, relevant industry standards and regulations (CNSC, NRC, IAEA)
- Experience with managing client relations, scope changes, schedule and budgets, on complex engineering projects.
- G class driver’s license and ability to visit site when required.
- Experience mentoring and supervising junior staff.
- Be a part of multi-functional teams with the ability to relate well and cooperate with other members of the team, to effectively coordinate activities and accomplish goals.
- Eligibility to obtain relevant Nuclear Security Clearance.
- Working knowledge of power system and modelling software using tools like ETAP, EasyPower or SKM.
- Working knowledge of Smartplant Electrical software would be an asset.
- Knowledge of instrumentation and controls would be considered a strong asset.
- Experience with design of fire alarm, heat tracing and cathodic protection systems will be considered a strong asset.
- Proven experience with Owner’s Engineer role
- Proven experience of covering I&C scope as lead electrical engineer is an asset
