GHD has an opening in our Ontario Region for a Senior Safety and Health Professional who aspires to become an active leader in a vibrant, well-established company.
GHD’s HSE Team supports the day-to-day business needs for the Ontario Region, for a diverse array of private and public sector clients, including in the areas of heavy construction, engineering design, environmental site services, landfill operations, geotechnical engineering and field inspections, hazardous material spill and emergency response services, materials testing laboratory environments, mining, and construction administration. GHD’s Ontario offices are located in Waterloo, St. Catharines, Mississauga, Toronto, Markham, Whitby, Peterborough, and Ottawa.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
- Report to and assist the Ontario Regional HSE Manager in the delivery of GHD’s HSE Management System and initiatives.
- Provide support and guidance across all levels of the organization to ensure compliance with Regional legislative requirements and GHD’s HSE procedures.
- Support the Regional HSE team with the coordination and completion of annual internal and external Certificate of Recognition (COR) audits in Ontario.
- Lead investigations into HSE incidents and near misses, analyze root causes, implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence, ensure timely reporting in accordance with GHD and regulatory requirements, and remain available to respond and prepare reports in a timely manner when needed.
- Provide support and guidance to project teams with the development and implementation of comprehensive Health and Safety plans and Job Safety Environmental Analyses.
- Manage work related injury claims and development of return-to-work plans.
- Support Regional HSE training programs, including onboarding training for new employees, coordination and delivery of internal and external training, and the development of new training content as needed.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate HSE prevention programs, procedures, and occupational health and safety monitoring tools.
- Collaborate with employees and managers on risk identification and elimination, while promoting preventative actions.
- Provide leadership to promote positive HSE culture and accountability across all levels of the organization.
- Facilitate Joint Health and Safety Committees/Health and Safety Representative requirements for offices, materials testing laboratories and active construction project sites.
- Conduct inspections of GHD offices, laboratories, and active construction project sites to identify existing and potential risks, recommend mitigation strategies, implement preventative and corrective measures, and perform follow-up verification.
- Facilitate GHD’s crisis and emergency management programs.
- Coordinate the collection of HSE performance measurements, identify areas for improvement, and prepare relevant reports.
- Assist with the development of HSE performance reports and communications.
- Provide support and guidance on occupational health monitoring program requirements.
- Support personal protective equipment inspection programs and inventories.
- Stay informed about changes in relevant safety legislation.
- Special projects as assigned.
- Perform all other job-related tasks.
What you will bring to the team:
- Degree or Diploma in Health and Safety, or other job-related field.
- Minimum of 8-10 years of health and safety experience preferably in the areas of construction, environmental services, materials testing, hazardous remediation; and/or engineering consulting.
- Possession or currently in pursuit of CRSP designation or equivalent an asset.
- Possession or currently in pursuit of the National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification and field experience an asset.
- Experience as an IHSA Certificate of Recognition (COR) internal auditor or ISO 18001/45001 auditor an asset.
- Proven knowledge, understanding and work experience with Canadian/Ontario occupational health and safety laws, regulations, and standards relevant to GHD’s activities.
- Knowledge and experience with HSE Management Systems and behavior-based safety programs.
- Experience in developing and implementing HSE programs.
- Experience conducting health, safety and environment risk analyses and development of health and safety plans or equivalent.
- Experience conducting incident investigations using Root Cause Analysis-type methods, or equivalent.
- Experience managing WSIB reporting, claims management and return to work process.
- Having a strong work ethic, motivated, energetic, goal-oriented, and having a positive outlook.
- Detail oriented, with strong organizational, planning, time management, and prioritization skills to work effectively in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify alternate solutions.
- Strong sense of professionalism and diplomacy.
- Positive attitude, good teamwork, and excellent leadership skills to build and maintain relationships with key business partners and stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate in English with advanced written and oral communication skills.
- Digital literacy and proficiency in computer systems, namely Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Teams), Adobe, etc.
- Must have a current valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Available for regional travel (approximately 5 % of the working year).
- May be required to complete additional training courses as necessary to support the role.
