Water Meter Technician Crew Leader

Job Status: Permanent Full-Time

Pay & Grade: $40.91 Hourly Grade/Band: N/A

Hours of Work:40 Hours per week

Initial location: Kitchener Operations Facility

Posting period:March 18 to March 31, 2025 (at 6:00pm)

Responsibilities

  • This position is mainly an in-office position (approximately 80% in office and 20% in the field) and requires strong computer and communication skills..
  • Review and assign daily work using SAP and Clevest to staff, ensuring efficiency and daily productivity goals are realized, including re-routing staff when required.
  • Oversight and communication with external contractors hired for additional meter exchanges.
  • Main liaison on behalf of the City, with builders and customers with respect to water metering.
  • Track and dispense water meters to contractors for new construction and arrange for billing for new meters and deficient installations using Excel for data entry and analysis.
  • Forecasting/Ordering water meters from vendor for meter replacement program, large meter set needs as well as new construction requirements to ensure sufficient stock of various meter types and sizes is maintained.
  • Creation of service orders for inspections, demolitions, exchanges, and maintenance in SAP to meet workloads.
  • Follow-up with Builders/customers on inspections to ensure meters are installed according to KU specifications.
  • Investigate high bill complaints from customers, meter issues and communicate to Revenue.
  • Coordinate replacement of large commercial and industrial water meters.
  • Organize and execute yearly seasonal installations and removals of water meters.
  • Ensure proper follow-up with regards to any backflow deficiencies/illegal connections identified by meter shop staff.
  • Investigate damage to city infrastructure (e.g., frozen meters) as well as claims against the City.
  • Interact daily with Revenue for special service order requests/follow-up.
  • Determine proper meter sizing for new commercial and industrial projects.
  • Assist with the development of customer communications/education, standards, work instructions, and processes related to meters and installation.
  • Arrange for maintenance/replacement of all equipment needed for day-to-day operation including test benches, pumps, glass bead machine, portable testing equipment, power tools, hand tools, etc.
  • Train Water Meter Staff on associated computer software and procedures
  • Management of Confined Space Permit system for Water Meter Department
  • Assist with corporate projects/pilot projects associated with the Water Meter Shop (e.g., AMI) and emerging technologies.
  • Meter testing – following AWWA procedures when testing meters for customer complaints/requests as well as for the bulk water filling station.
  • Follow-up on building demolitions to ensure water meter removal.
  • Completes meter exchanges/service order calls as required (e.g., emergencies/coverage)
  • Arrange for scrap metal pick up, as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years' related experience.
  • Valid MTO driver's license class "G" in good standing.
  • Recognized as a Plumber’s/ Journeyperson License with the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities.
  • Proficient in installing, repairing, replacing, and conducting accuracy verifications on Positive Displacement Meters.
  • Proficiency in the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with conducting high water consumption investigations.
  • Physically capable of lifting and carrying weights up to 60lbs.
  • A strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Must have the ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and verbal) as well as customer service skills,
  • Capable of accurately completing and submitting paperwork on time and in a legible manner.
  • Capable of working in all environments and weather conditions.
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
