Position Overview:

Sanitary and Stormwater Utilities (SSU) Operations is seeking a dynamic and motivated individual to step into the role of Assistant Supervisor. In this position, you'll play a crucial part in the planning, coordination, training, directing, and supervising of essential tasks related to sanitary and stormwater infrastructure.

This position is an integral member of our supervisory team, taking on on-call responsibilities and ensuring smooth operations around the clock. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your leadership skills and make a significant impact in a vital area of our operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, organize and assist with the scheduling of various construction repairs such as pipe repairs, watercourse maintenance, and pond clean out.
  • Assists with the supervision of full time and temporary staff compliment and ensuring seamless delivery of all SSU critical services such as Pumping Station Maintenance, Blockade Response, Pipe Repairs, Sewer Flushing, Catchbasin Cleaning, Watercourse Maintenance, SWMF Maintenance and Infrastructure Inspection Programs.
  • Leading well-established programs as needed with oversight from existing Supervisors and be responsible for completing payroll (work orders on City Works) and spending up to 25% of the day in the field.
  • Assist with assigning, prioritizing, monitoring, and evaluating work activities based on resource capacity and operational priority.
  • Coordinate work of external contractors doing work on storm & sanitary infrastructure.
  • Apply technical knowledge related to wastewater collection to support maintenance and operation of storm & sanitary infrastructure normally acquired through on the job experience and wastewater collection licensing.
  • Ensure the health and safety of workers, inspects job sites for unsafe conditions and ensures PPE are being worn and provided to workers.
  • Implement and oversee the delivery of operations work as defined by the supervisor.
  • Assess, evaluate, and act upon complaints from the public and staff.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of policy, safe operating procedures, fleet permit requirements, and other related administrative duties.
  • Participate in the recruitment process for permanent and temporary staff, including setting up new staff with appropriate training requirements.
  • Provide on-the-job training to staff on daily functions.
  • Maintain and update standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Assist with Business Improvement initiatives by working collaboratively with the Corporate Contact Centre and other divisions.
  • Return resident calls and assist with coordinating daily responses to service requests, complaints, and investigations.
  • Maintain and track accurate records of staff, equipment and material utilized in the performance of operations activities.
  • Monitor operating expenditures to ensure compliance with budget envelopes.
  • Provide coverage and participate in on-call shift and cover absences within supervisory team.
  • Participate in the SSU on-call rotation as Overall Responsible Operator (ORO).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 2-year diploma or 2 years in a specialized post-secondary program in a related field or equivalent.
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in a government managed Wastewater Collection Facility or equivalent.
  • Ministry of the Environment Wastewater Collection License Level II with ability to successfully pass the Wastewater Collection License Level III exam within 12 months.
  • Valid MTO “G” class driver’s license in good standing with the ability to obtain a “DZ” driver’s license within 6 months of hire.
  • While on-call, must be able to respond as required (including on-site) within 45 minutes.
  • Strong leadership skills and committed to working within a cooperative team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct the work of others.
  • Superior interpersonal and public relations skills to deal effectively with staff and customers both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers including e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and work order systems.
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.

  • Grade 12 Diploma plus up to 1 year of post-secondary courses with minimum 7 years’ related and relevant experience
